Just a year later he was selected to the All-Star team for the first time after hitting .282 with 19 home runs and 21 stolen bases. In ’78, he won his first Silver Slugger Award in 1978, and he brought home the NL MVP in 1980 after hitting .304 with 178 hits and leading the league in HRs and RBIs. Dawson suffered a series of knee injuries throughout the early part of his career, which forced him to undergo multiple surgeries and caused him to miss significant time. Despite these setbacks, “The Hawk” remained one of the most feared hitters in the game.
