In basketball, he was a three-year letter winner known for his athleticism and his ability to rebound and score inside. On the football field, he he was a starting defensive end during his sophomore and junior seasons. Known for his speed, strength, and toughness, he earned All-Big Ten honors in 1972. Winfield is best known for his baseball career, both in college and in the professional ranks. He was a 2-time All-American and a standout pitcher and hitter. After being the only person in history to be drafted in three different professional sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA and the ABA), he went on to play 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, earning 12 All-Star selections and induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
