WHAT PROFESSIONALS ARE SAYING AFTER WORKING WITH US

Mat brought two things to his teaching that are basic to his nature: his respect for the students in his care and his easy way with them. He is comfortable with his students. Consequently, they respect him and are comfortable in his classes.
— SALLY H. (former mentor and administrator)

Ms. Uhlenhop designs lessons that are relevant, motivating, and engage students in active learning. . . . [She] creates a learning environment where all students feel welcomed and respected, one that is both safe and consistent for her students. She is a teacher that students trust and admire and is an asset to our community. Ms. Uhlenhop  holds her students accountable and to high standards . . . [and] provides constant feedback and support to assure all students are capable of achieving their academic as well as personal goals. She is a teacher that students, parents, colleagues trust and admire.
— GINA P. (former administrator)

During my thirty-eight years as a teacher, rarely have I seen [another teacher] approach their subject and students with the enthusiasm and caring that Mat has this year. . . . It is a pleasure to see a teacher demand, and get results, of his students the way he did this year. . . . On a personal note, Mat taught my son [who later became valedictorian] in AP history. I can honestly say that he has never been pushed as hard in his high school career as he was by Mr. Astrom. His thinking skills and in-depth understanding have been raised to the college level. I think this speaks very highly of Mat’s abilities.
— JIM W. (mentor-teacher and former colleague)

Karin is one of the most intelligent, well-travelled, and sophisticated educators that I have had the honor of working with in my 30 years of teaching. I have never seen a colleague work harder to create, implement, and (most importantly) assess and provide authentic feedback for students. Karin is absolutely on a mission to help students become skilled and confident writers. She spends hundreds of hours outside of school working diligently and with incredible focus to not just ‘grade’ student writing but to help our students revise, edit, and reconstruct their writing with specific goals in mind. The evidence of her success is the pilgrimage of college students who come back every break to see her.
— KAREN T. (former colleague)

A Little Bit about Me and My Approach…

In case you are wondering why I am qualified to be guiding you on a journey toward academic awesomeness.

A Teacher’s Journey

The path to where I am now began with a thirst for academics, an adventurist spirit, and the desire to improve the conditions around me. With teaching, I knew quickly that I was in the right place because I liked children and could communicate well with them. Twenty-plus years later and a world of educational experiences in my backpack, I am poised to continue the adventure at the head of GLOBAL EXPERIENCE TEACHING.

So what do I do, and how have I gotten to where I am today? Ultimately, I try to make one good decision after another, weighing the information in front of me and the experiences behind me. My teaching philosophy has always centered on accelerating the learning process of students and increasing student efficiency, which correlates directly to increased academic achievement. I provide students with an abundance of options to connect positively and effectively with their academic, emotional, and social needs.

The quality of a teacher can make a tremendous difference in the way students approach learning. I believe, and those I have worked closely with in the past agree, that I am one of those teachers that makes a significant difference in the creation of life-long learners.

Content Specialist

A well-chosen teacher, coach or tutor can make learning relevant and rigorous and help students to apply their learning to show growth on school assessments. They are experts in their academic content -- for me, this is the field of U.S. and World History.

The BEST of us help students embrace school assignments by putting them into an appropriate context. Forget about abstract assignments or rote worksheets. My teaching is about analysis - of the historical content and of the particular strengths and weaknesses of the student.

Additionally, making connections between content material and student interests is important in cultivating student investment in their work. All the while, the best teachers and tutors - NOT the ones who are the most fun or who complete students’ assignments for them - make learning rigorous and aimed directly at where the student needs to go. They create an efficient path towards a goal. The lessons along the way should be challenging and encourage the student to stretch themselves, but not out of line with age-appropriate standards or relevant curricular focus.

The content knowledge of the teachers at GLOBAL EXPERIENCE TEACHING, LLC enhances student learning and offers the students an approach that very few classroom teachers have the time or ability to enact. In that way, we are the experts that, perhaps, your student needs to learn to their full potential.

Collaborator

Group-based instruction is a tried-and-true way to accomplish difficult tasks when the members of the group all share the same overarching goal and are situated amongst cohorts at a similar level or point in their development. This is especially true for advanced students. The teacher provides direct, skill-based and content-rich lessons to the whole group, then follows the instruction with activities designed to allow the students to practice and master the skills and content of the lesson.

In a group learning setting, we guide the students to look to each other for help, rather than relying solely on the instructor. Students bring unique understandings and experiences to the table, and collaboration between students makes each of them valuable agents in the team’s growth. Group instruction, when conducted well by an expert teacher, is reciprocal as students begin to understand that they have as much to teach others as they have to learn themselves. Culminating assessments and exercises allow the instructor to check for individual student understanding and inform the student of exactly where they stand in relation to their academic goal.

While the teachers at GLOBAL EXPERIENCE TEACHING, LLC address individual student’s gaps in learning, we also looking for opportunities to empower students to take agency in their learning and celebrate their own knowledge and understandings of the world around them. Students who struggle to ask questions and participate in a group setting may struggle as they emerge from high school into a wider world. Not if we can help it. Opportunity to practice life skills in collaboration and communication is fundamental to growth and development of a life-long learner.
