Steve Young faced several struggles early in his NFL career that tested his resilience and determination. Young's two years with the Buccaneers, which began in 1985 after he was acquired through a trade with the USFL's Los Angeles Express, was marked by inconsistent performances and throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. As losses piled on, the coaching staff and management began to lose confidence in Young's ability to lead the team effectively. Additionally, the Buccaneers had acquired quarterback Vinny Testaverde as the first overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft. Testaverde was seen as the team's future at quarterback, which further diminished Young's chances of securing the starting position. The Buccaneers made the decision to trade Young to the San Francisco 49ers in April 1987.
The trade turned out to be highly beneficial for both Young and the 49ers. Young thrived in the 49ers' West Coast Offense and later George Seifert, under Walsh following Joe Montana’s departure, eventually becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He won multiple MVP awards and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory. The trade allowed Young to fulfill his potential and establish himself as a Hall of Fame quarterback.
