SOLD - 1979 Joe Greene #65

$42.00

PSA 8: #15429387 - Near Mint to Mint

Hall of Fame member of the “Steel Curtain” and national icon.

“Mean Joe” Greene was the star of the legendary "Hey Kid, Catch!" Coca-Cola commercial, a or simply "Mean Joe Greene Coke Commercial." In the commercial, Greene is shown limping off the field after a tough game, looking exhausted and dejected. A young boy approaches him and offers him a Coke. Initially, Greene declines the offer, but then has a change of heart. He accepts the Coke, takes a sip, and then surprises the boy by tossing him his jersey as a token of appreciation. The boy smiles and says, "Wow! Thanks, Mean Joe!" The commercial ends with Greene smiling and the tagline, "Have a Coke and a smile." The commercial became an instant hit and is widely regarded as one of the best and most memorable commercials of all time. It captured the toughness of Greene as a player, while also revealing his softer and more human side. The contrast between his intimidating on-field persona and the kindness he displayed in the commercial certainly resonated with viewers and especially the fans of “Mean Joe” and Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain Defense.
